Employer Sponsored Visas

Australia offers a range of employer-sponsored visas designed for skilled workers who have been nominated by an Australian employer. These visas cater to various needs and circumstances, from temporary work to permanent residency.

The 482 visa, also known as the Temporary Skill Shortage (TSS) visa, is a temporary visa that allows Australian employers to sponsor skilled overseas workers to fill positions they can’t find suitably skilled Australians for.

It currently has three streams:

Short-term stream: For sourcing genuine temporary overseas skilled workers for a maximum of two years (or up to four years with an international trade obligation).

Medium-term stream: For sourcing highly skilled overseas workers to fill medium-term critical skills for up to four years, with eligibility for permanent residence after three years.

Labour Agreement stream: For sourcing overseas skilled workers according to a labour agreement with the Commonwealth, when standard visa programs are not available.

Subsequent entrant:

This visa is for family members of Subclass 482visa holders who are applying separately for their TSS visa and wish to join the primary TSS visa holder in Australia.

The Subclass 494 Skilled Employer Sponsored (Regional) visa is designed to help regional employers fill labour shortages by sponsoring skilled workers when suitable Australian workers are unavailable.

To qualify, applicants need sponsorship from a regional employer for a position expected to last at least five years. There’s a maximum age limit of 45 (with exemptions), a requirement for competent English, Regional Certifying Body (RCB) advice, and compliance with the Australian Immigration Department’s (AMSR) standards.

Applicants must also undergo a suitable skills assessment and possess a minimum of three years’ relevant skilled employment.

The Regional 494 Visa offers a clear route to Permanent Residence (PR) via the Subclass 191 Visa after completing three years of regional employment. This stands out as a significant advantage compared to the restricted PR avenues offered by the 482 TSS Visa program. Nevertheless, modifications are anticipated for TSS 482 visas alongside new PR pathways.

The Skills in Demand Visa, will be a replacement for the Temporary Skill Shortage (subclass 482) Visa, featuring a three-tiered system based on earnings and occupation. Expected to launch by the end of 2024, this visa aims to address labour market needs by providing clearer pathways to permanent residency and more time for workers to find new sponsors if needed. The Skills in Demand Visa has been introduced as part of the Australian government’s Migration Strategy.

The Skills in Demand Visa doesn’t have a specific occupation list. However, there’s a related list called the Priority Migration Skilled Occupation List (PMSOL). It identifies critical skills needed for Australia’s economic recovery from COVID-19. While it’s not directly tied to the Skills in Demand Visa, it provides insights into in-demand occupations. Some examples from the PMSOL include Anaesthetist, School Principal, Midwife, Electrician, and Environmental Consultant. To stay abreast the Skills in Demand Visa news, please Subscribe here.
