The Subclass 407 visa lets you participate in workplace-based training to enhance your skills in your job, field of study, or professional development in Australia. The Subclass 407 Training Visa is a short-term visa designed for those undergoing occupational training or professional development. It supports activities to meet registration or licensing requirements, improve skills, or build capacity for overseas work. The Subclass 407 (Training) visa is not intended to address labor shortages and is not suitable for those whose main goal is to work. It is designed for individuals to participate in occupational training with a sponsoring organisation in line with the visa’s purpose. It can also be an alternative for individuals who do not qualify for a Subclass 482 TSS visa.

There are three types of occupational training:

 

Occupational training required for registration

Workplace-based training is required to get occupational registration, membership or licensing. The registration, membership or licensing is mandatory to work in that occupation in Australia or your home country.

Occupational training to improve skills in an eligible occupation

Workplace-based structured training programs that:

Are specifically tailored to meet the training needs of the nominee
Relate to an occupation listed on the eligible skilled occupations list
Involve a nominee with recent and relevant prior experience, including:
At least 12 months of full-time employment or study experience in the occupation
Experience gained within the 24 months immediately before the nomination is lodged

Occupational training for capacity building overseas.

Structured workplace-based training in Australia for up to 6 months is available for students who:

Are currently enrolled in a foreign educational institution
Need to complete practical training, research, or observation to obtain their qualification
The training must be specifically tailored to the nominee’s needs.

Your sponsor must be approved as a Temporary Activities Sponsor (TAS):

Your sponsor must have nominated you to participate in a program of occupational training unless your sponsor is a Australian Commonwealth Government agency.

Nomination requirements are different depending on the purpose or type of training.

There are over 700 occupations ranging from managers to trades. The strict requirements of the other work visas such as Labour Market Testing (LMT) are not a legislative requirement. 


This nomination type does not cover applicants who are already employed in an occupation and seek to gain a qualification, such as membership in a professional association (e.g., an accountant working while studying to become a chartered accountant).

For the nomination, the sponsor must provide a letter from the relevant regulatory body in Australia or the applicant’s home country, stating that the training is necessary for the nominee to obtain mandatory registration for their occupation. This letter generally meets the requirements of migration law regulations, provided it comes from the appropriate body responsible for registration in the occupation.

The ANZSCO standard can help determine whether the identified occupation requires registration to work in Australia or New Zealand.


The visa applicant should possess relevant qualifications and employment experience. It is advisable for the applicant to consult with a Registered Migration Agent to gain a comprehensive understanding of the regulations and their obligations.

Note:

A large part of the Subclass 407 application process is submitting a “Training Plan” that meets the legislative requirements. The Department of Home Affairs will assess if the training duration is suitable. For instance, if a trainee needs 12 months of practical experience for registration and has already completed 6 months, only 6 months of additional training will be approved. If there is uncertainty about the relevance of the nominee’s prior experience for registration, officers should consult the regulatory body for clarification.
