The Student visa allows you to study various courses including:

Higher education, Vocational and Education Training (VET), Pathway courses, English Language Intensive Courses for Overseas Students (ELICOS), Primary and secondary school, Secondary school exchange programs, Postgraduate research, Non-award courses (e.g., Study Abroad and Exchange semesters), Courses sponsored by the Australian Government’s Department of Foreign Affairs (DFAT) or Defence.

Enroll in a course at an Australian education provider and obtain a confirmation of enrolment (CoE) before applying for the student visa.

Subclass 500

Study in Australia with the Student Visa! This visa lets you join an eligible course, travel in and out of Australia, and work up to 48 hours a fortnight. It’s temporary, lasting up to 5 years based on your course length. Primary school children typically get up to 3 years. You can include family members in your application, and they must meet health and character requirements.

Student Visa (Subclass 500) – New English Requirements from 23 March 2024.


English Proficiency: Minimum IELTS score increases from 5.5 to 6.0 (or equivalent).


Packaged ELICOS Course: Minimum IELTS score increases from 4.5 to 5.0 (or equivalent).


University Foundation/Pathway Programs: Require a minimum IELTS score of 5.5 (or equivalent) for courses listed on the Department’s website.

Student Visa (Subclass 500): Allows you to stay in Australia to study full-time at a recognized education institution.

Student Guardian Visa (Subclass 590): Allows you to stay in Australia as the guardian of an international student under 18 years old studying on a student visa.

Additional Information:

Dependents: You can include family members in your application. They must meet health and character requirements and be listed in your application.

Visa Extensions: If you need to extend your stay, you must apply for a new visa before your current visa expires.
