Subclass 189 is a permanent visa for skilled workers who can independently meet the Australian immigration requirements without state or territory nomination.

Applicants are assessed based on a points system that considers factors such as age, education, work experience, English language proficiency, and other criteria.
Skill Select
An online system called SkillSelect allows skilled workers to submit an Expression of Interest (EOI) and be considered for a skilled visa.
Visa Categories
The GSM program includes several visa subclasses, such as the Skilled Independent Visa (Subclass 189), Skilled Nominated Visa (Subclass 190), and Skilled Regional (Provisional) Visa (Subclass 491).
Nominated Occupations
Applicants must nominate an occupation that is on Australia’s Skilled Occupation List (SOL) and have their skills assessed by the relevant assessing authority.
State/Territory Nomination
Some visas require nomination by an Australian state or territory government, which can also provide additional points towards the application.
The GSM program is designed to address skill shortages in Australia and support the country’s economic growth by attracting skilled workers from around the world.
Point Test
Take the Preliminary Points Test
You must be at least 18 years old and less than 45 years old. Points are awarded based on your age range: 18-24 years (25 points), 25-32 years (30 points), 33-39 years (25 points), or 40-44 years (15 points).
You must meet the English language skills requirement. Points are awarded based on your English proficiency: Competent English (0 points), Proficient English (10 points), or Superior English (20 points).
Points are awarded based on your skilled employment experience. For overseas employment: Less than 3 years (0 points), 3-4 years (5 points), 5-7 years (10 points), 8+ years (15 points). For Australian employment: Less than 1 year (0 points), 1-2 years (5 points), 3-4 years (10 points), 5-7 years (15 points), 8+ years (20 points).
Points are awarded based on your educational qualifications. For a Doctorate: 20 points, for a Bachelor degree: 15 points, for a Diploma or trade qualification: 10 points, or for a qualification recognized by the assessing authority: 10 points.
Points are awarded for a specialist education qualification from an Australian educational institution. If you have a Masters or Doctorate with at least 2 academic years of study in relevant fields, you can claim 10 points.
To claim points for the Australian study requirement, you must have a degree, diploma, or trade qualification from an Australian educational institution that meets the Australian study requirement. This gives 5 points.
Points are awarded for completing a Professional Year in Australia in your nominated occupation. If you have completed a Professional Year program, you can claim 5 points.
