2024/2025 Skills in Demand Visa
Visa Information
The Skills in Demand Visa, will be a replacement for the Temporary Skill Shortage (subclass 482) Visa, featuring a three-tiered system based on earnings and occupation. Expected to launch by the end of 2024, this visa aims to address labour market needs by providing clearer pathways to permanent residency and more time for workers to find new sponsors if needed. The Skills in Demand Visa has been introduced as part of the Australian government’s Migration Strategy.
The Skills in Demand Visa doesn’t have a specific occupation list. However, there’s a related list called the Priority Migration Skilled Occupation List (PMSOL). It identifies critical skills needed for Australia’s economic recovery from COVID-19. While it’s not directly tied to the Skills in Demand Visa, it provides insights into in-demand occupations. Some examples from the PMSOL include Anaesthetist, School Principal, Midwife, Electrician, and Environmental Consultant.

The Migration Strategy refers to a commitment by the Australian government to restore migration levels to normal. It aims to strengthen wage and condition protections for both local and migrant workers.
Three-Tiered System:
The Skills in Demand Visa replaces the existing Temporary Skill Shortage (subclass 482) Visa. It operates on a three-tiered system based on annual earnings and occupation.
Tier 1 – Specialist Skills Pathway:
- No occupation list applicable.
- Requires guaranteed annual earnings of at least $135,000 (indexed annually).
- Priority processing with a commitment to a 7-day median visa processing time.
Tier 2 – Core Skills Pathway:
For occupations earning between $70,000 and $135,000 per year.
Based on a revised “Skills in Demand” list managed by Jobs and Skills Australia.
For detailed eligibility and exemptions:
No occupation list applicable.
For occupations earning under $70,000 per year.
Further assessment by the government is being undertaken for this pathway, likely to be sector-specific.
